Mount Shasta Rescue – 06-30-2018

This past weekend at Mount Shasta – Cisko Basurto and myself and a few others from our Team were involved in getting this person aid and rescued off the mountain. I initially called SAR for the rescue and a friend Ronald Dalla Tor, helped carry the injured climber down the mountain.

MOUNT SHASTA, Calif. — A climber described by authorities as “well-prepared during his ascent” was struck by a fallen rock, suffering injuries and requiring a multi-agency rescue from Mount Shasta, Saturday.

Efforts led by Siskiyou County Search and Rescue and involving several agencies located and rescued David Backlin, 29, of Nevada City, California, in the vicinity of Lake Helen, on Mount Shasta. The initial call for assistance said the injured climber was at an elevation of 11,550 feet along Avalanche Gulch, a popular route with climbers looking to summit Shasta.

A California Air National Guard helicopter found and airlifted the injured hiker to the Old Ski Bowl, where Backlin was then transported to Mercy Mount Shasta Hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. “This was another life-saving effort by a dedicated group of professionals and volunteers, willing to risk their lives for others in need,” Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey said.

In addition to the Siskiyou County Search and Rescue team, agencies taking part in the rescue included the USFS Climbing Rangers, California Highway Patrol’s H-14 helicopter unit, California OES, and the California National Guard’s Spartan 155 helicopter crew.

The initial report of the injured climber was received by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team at 5:36 a.m. According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, the crew flying the California Air National Guard Spartan 155 helicopter located him at 12:18 p.m. that afternoon.

The Milky Way at Yosemite – 06-21-2018

People often ask me, how can you get a picture of the Milky Way, I only know that if there is little light pollution and no moon light makes for a perfect opportunity. I’ve been fortunate to catch a few Milky Way pictures in Yosemite. This one was in the Tunnel View around 5:00 am.

The Merced River – 06-21-2018

The Merced River drops over Nevada Falls and Vernal Falls, together known as the “Giant Staircase”, then receives Illilouette Creek and flows into Yosemite Valley, where it meanders between pine forests and meadows that fill the valley floor.

Happy National Trails Day!

Each year on the first Saturday in June it is National Trails Day.

Events held throughout the United States help promote awareness of the wide variety of benefits that trails provide, encourage people to discover their local trials, raise awareness of trail issues and instill excitement for the outdoors.

Trails are for more than just hiking. Trails provide access to waterways for canoeing and paddle trips. Birdwatching and geocaching are some other favorite activities. Learning land navigation or biking are also great trail pursuits.

National Trails Day is also an opportunity to thank the many volunteers, land agencies, trail developers, park employees, rangers for their help in developing and maintaining the trails.
